Mandela Day at The Seed Fund

Mandela Day is just around the corner and plans are underway here at the Seed Fund to get the community into the Mandela Day spirit and make a difference to the lives of those living in the Malacca Road informal settlement.

As we celebrate the 100th year of Madiba’s birth, we want to invite you to partner with us and get involved in one of three areas while you serve your local community for 67 minutes on Wednesday 18 July.

The message behind Mandela Day is simple – EVERYONE has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better. This year we invite all corporate’s and individuals to get into the spirit of Mandela Day and help us in achieving our goal which is to transform the community of Malacca Road one household at a time.

With all three of our projects, you have the option to offer your time, finances or both and whichever way you can assist, will be greatly appreciated.

Choose which activity best suits you:

This would entail cleaning up litter in an area of the settlement, putting it into black bags and throwing the bags into the skip provided.

With the community living opposite the dump, a lot of the rubbish find its way into the settlement. This becomes a hazard to the children playing there and the community loses pride in the environment they live in.

Donations are needed towards this project to hire the skip, to purchase refuge bins for each house hold and black bags.

Each group will be responsible for painting one household with the paint provided.

This will give the community a sense of pride in their homes and it will help brighten up the settlement.

Donations are needed towards this project to purchase the paint and paintbrushes.

Each group will be responsible for setting up and planting a horizontal veggie garden for one of the households to manage and maintain.

The community can use the vegetables as a source of sustenance and to help an already impoverished community look after itself.

Donations are needed towards this project to purchase all the required items for the veggie gardens.

Simply click on the following link and fill out the form indicating which activity you will be taking part in on the day, or if you will be making a donation, or both.

If you are a company and want to be involved in more than once activity on the day, please fill out a separate form for the different projects you want to be apart of.

Kate Watkins from Edge Training ( will then contact you to confirm your time slot for the day and answer any questions you may have.
